Sustainability in Corrugated Packaging

At Atlas Container, we pride ourselves on being a leader in sustainable corrugated packaging. We believe that sustainable practices extend far beyond just using recycled paper. In fact, relying solely on recycled paper can sometimes compromise the durability and safety of packaging during transit. This is why we focus on multiple aspects of sustainability throughout the production and delivery of our corrugated packaging.

The Journey of Corrugated Packaging Production

Sourcing Sustainable Virgin Paper

Our commitment to sustainability begins with sourcing our paper. We partner with forestry companies that adhere to sustainable forest management practices and certifications such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). These partners ensure that trees are harvested responsibly, with a focus on maintaining biodiversity, water quality protection and supporting local communities. Sustainable forestry practices also include planting new trees to replace those that have been cut down, maintaining a healthy balance.

Eco-Friendly Manufacturing Processes

At Atlas Container, we employ state-of-the-art manufacturing processes designed to minimize environmental impact. Our production facilities are equipped with energy-efficient machinery that reduces electricity consumption. We also utilize water-based inks and adhesives, which are not only effective, but non-toxic and have a lower environmental footprint compared to their solvent-based counterparts. Additionally, our facilities implement comprehensive waste management programs to recycle any scrap material generated during production.

Responsible Water Use

Water use in corrugated production is another critical area where sustainability can be improved. We implement closed-loop water systems in our manufacturing process, which allow us to recycle and reuse water multiple times, significantly reducing freshwater consumption. This practice helps conserve local water resources and ensures that our operations do not contribute to water scarcity.

Local Sourcing and Reduced Shipping Distances

One of the most impactful ways to curb carbon emissions is to reduce the distance products travel. By sourcing our raw materials locally whenever possible, we cut down on the transportation-related carbon footprint. Furthermore, all of our finished corrugated products are shipped to customers within a 3-hour radius from our Severn, MD facility using our own fleet. This localized delivery network not only ensures timely shipments but also minimizes the fuel consumption and emissions associated with long-haul trucking.

Efficient Inventory and Production Management

Atlas Container champions a just-in-time production model, which reduces the need for large warehouses and excess stock. By producing only what is needed when it is needed, we lower the energy consumption and resource use associated with storing and managing surplus inventory. This approach also means that our packaging solutions are always up to date, reducing waste from outdated or unusable stock.

Educating Our Customers

We believe that sustainability is a joint effort. That's why we strive to educate our customers about the best practices for sustainable packaging. This includes advising on the suitable use of materials that balance durability and environmental impact, helping them understand the benefits of regional sourcing, and promoting the adoption of efficient inventory practices.

Benefits of Sustainable Packaging

Reduced Waste

Sustainable packaging materials are biodegradable, compostable or recyclable, minimizing waste in landfills and encouraging the recycling process.

Less Energy Consumption

Sustainable materials often require less energy to produce, decreasing overall energy usage and water consumption in manufacturing.

Cost Savings

Sustainable packaging often involves lightweight or reusable materials, which can reduce shipping costs and save money over time by reducing the need for single use materials.

Healthier Alternatives

Using alternatives such as water-based inks and adhesives is not only effective, they're also free from harmful or toxic substances.

Consumer Appeal

More and more consumers are preferring brands that prioritize sustainability. Using eco-friendly packaging can improve brand perception and loyalty.
